くによしうたがわのえです。くによしのえは大好きです。このえは猫飼好五十三疋です。(Cats suggested as the fifty-three stations of the Tokaido)

サンクスギビングの休み

サンクスギビングの休みにうちにかえりました。やすみにゆっくりをして、よかったです。たくさんねて、ねことあそんで、おかあさんとりょうりをして、たくさんおいしいたべものを食べました。タキ(turkey) やポタト大好きですが、クランベリソース(cranberry sauce) はあまり好きじゃありません。そして、しゅくだいをして、えいがを見ました。ともだちとあって、いしょにコーヒーを飲みました。

まっちゃとわがし

 

 

らいなつはまっちゃをしました。まっちゃをのんで、わがしをたべました。おいしくて、きれいですね。

ヌジャベス

ヌジャベスはおんがくかでした。東京からきました。日本語の名前はせばじゅんです。ヌジャベスはとてもゆめいですよ。Unfortunately, Nujabes died a few years ago in a car crash. ヌジャベスはアニメのおんがくをしました。He also worked with a lot of American hip hop artists and producers.　ときどきべんきょうして、ヌジャベスのおんがくをききます。きれいで、好きですよ！

 

あじへい！

 しゅまつ、私と私のともだちはあじへいにいきました！

おすしを食べました。

みそしるを飲みましたそしてギョーザを食べました。

それから、おべんとを食べました！

べんとの中にとんかつがあります。とんかつのみぎはすしです。

すしのちかくにサラードがあります。サラードのひだりにちらしがあります。

ちらしはたまごとサケとまぐろです。ちらしのしたにごはんがあります。

となりのトトロ

きのうのばんとなりのトトロをみました。しばたせんせいはクラスでトトロをはなしました。Totoro seems to come up in class a lot. I hadn't seen it since I was very little and had forgotten most of it, so I decided to watch it again last night. トトロはとてもきれいなえいがですね！トトロのえがありますよ。

PE Reflection and Goals

Reflection:

I'll admit that I set relatively easy goals for PE at the beginning of the semester. I don't feel that I have a problem saying words with repeated sounds and pauses and I'm very satisfied with my r-moras. I speak a little more confidently in class, but only a little because I am still getting used to an ever-widening range of vocabulary and sentence structures. Though shadowing is helpful in making me sound closer to "Japanese" and understanding pitch and rhythm, it can't help with placing particles in my sentences in class. As for the activities I listed, I haven't gone to the Japanese table, and I haven't said any tongue twisters. Otherwise, I have practiced shadowing frequently, listened to Japanese songs, and watched a few Japanese films. Even though I haven't done everything I've planned, I still feel happy with my progress of understanding of Japanese linguistics.

New Goals and Activities

• Say tongue twisters!
• Visit language table three times before the end of December
• Shadow faster PE recordings
• Talk in Japanese with my friend from Tokyo 2 times a week
• Improve pitch when speaking in class
• Sound truly Japanese in one PE recording before the end of the semester

This artist is really strange, but I really like him. Yoshitomo Nara is a pop artist, and you can find his works all over the world, but one or two of his paintings are at the MoMA in NYC. Check him out!

京都でラーメんを食べました。This summer in Kyoto I went to a delicious, hole-in-the-wall noodle shop called よしはる. Here's a picture of the yummy pork ramen I ate many times!

Introduction

こんにちは

Nicholson desu, hajimemashite,

ニコルソンです、はじめまして。

I’ve always enjoyed Japanese culture but I didn’t really realize how much until recently. I especially love films by Hayao Miyazaki, woodblock prints, novels by Haruki Murakami, and Japanese food, just to name a few things. The film Lost in Translation (which I’m sure many of you have seen- if you haven’t you ought to) came out when I was nine and from that age I knew I had to visit Japan.

I finally went this summer when I stayed in Japan for 7 weeks through the Princeton Global Seminar in 京都 Kyoto, visiting 東京 Tokyo afterwards. Kyoto is very historic and traditional while Tokyo is more modern and international. One thing I love about Kyoto is that they love sweets and fancy European desserts. I went to temples nearly every day and never became bored, while I discovered that most of the cuisine is not only difficult to find in the US but also delicious far more than I had known. I highly recommend おこのみやき (okonomiyaki) and any kind of どんぶり (donburi). Tokyo, on another note, is the most beautifully modern city and I loved every moment I was there. I learned quite a bit of Japanese and it made me realize how this interest I’ve had for a long time is really worth studying.

Even though I already have basic Japanese skills I know this class will soon become difficult, especially since I know very little Kanji. Learning Kanji is probably what I’m most excited about, because without it, understanding written Japanese is very difficult. In general, I look forward to being better able to express myself in an East Asian language. Of course I already know things like ありがとうございます（arigatou gozaimasu), おはよお(ohayoo), and こんばんは(konbanwa), but I forgot about many other phrases we received on the handout like しつれえします(shitsuree shimasu). I think the hardest part about this class will be disciplining myself to properly study Japanese every day.
